What’s the difference between punk rock and alternative rock?
I know that alternative rock incorporated several elements from old-fashioned punk rock but other than that I still don’t see the difference between the two genres that much. Help clarify it for me, please.
Yikes, these answers are terrible! Punk music is hard to describe, because it is less of a music genre and more of a movement. Real punk focuses on DIY ethos, that is “do-it-yourself” and also think-for-yourself approach to everything. It is about independence, and rebellion against the inherent oppression of a forced social structure. Second, it does has a certain music style (the cliche “three chords and a drumbeat”) but that is besides the point. Notable punk bands include the following:
Crass: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aen9I_JmdtI
Zounds: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8w14IaS8Us
X: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wRWunSUmEm4
Discharge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZhoJj022nQk
Rudimentary Peni: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsuOeFiKoXo
Alternative is a little complicated, because it can be broken up into two parts:
(1) First, it as a condition that applies to music that is outside of mainstream (or, alternative to mainstream). However, bands that were once considered Alternative began to make it big (such as The Smiths and The Cure) and consequently made this term near obsolete. An Alternative band can not be mainstream, because (by contradiction) it would no longer be alternative. Therefore, plenty of punk bands can be considered Alternative, because no (real) punk band is mainstream.
(2) The second definition of Alternative has to do with sound. The ’sound’ began around the time of post-punk, when bands were taking punk ethic and applying to new, artistic, and experimental music. Sooner or later, these bands could not be placed into any genre, so they were called “Alternative” from there on.
Notable Alternative rock bands include the following:
The Jesus and Mary Chain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=noeTCf8PLuc
Sonic Youth: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRi2epOS5SA
Joy Division: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PldpBJEn4vQ
REM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KA57Pafq_NU
Pixies: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v3r-xMt9JmM
In conclusion, the difference between punk rock and Alternative rock depends on which definition of Alternative implied. Punk is (conditionally) an Alternative band because it is non-mainstream, but is not in the second, sound-relevant definition.
Hope that helps.

Buddha Mind, Buddha Body: Walking Toward Enlightenment
$2.43 DIVIBuddha Mind, Buddha Body/Iexpands upon the themes in Thich Nhat Hanh’s bookIUnderstanding Our Mind./IIt opens with the question: Is free will possible? This concept becomes a leitmotif as the author considers how the mind functions and how we can work with it to cultivate more freedom and understanding, how to be in closer touch with reality, and how to create the conditions for our own happiness. Nhat Hanh discusses the connection between psychology, neuroscience, and meditation. He describes the importance of creativity and visualization in a successful meditation practice, presents basic Buddhist practices (particularly walking and sitting meditation), and writes movingly about the importance of brotherhood and sisterhood in finding love, happiness, and harmonious coexistence with others. Punk
$4.98 It has been over twenty-five years since punk rock transformed the landscape of music and popular culture, but the significance of the era continues to endure. Whether you take your Year Zero from The Stooges in 1969 or the heady bile of The Clash and Sex Pistols, it's impossible to overstate the importance of punk. This book examines the songs that encapsulated punks' message of dissatisfaction, anger, and integrity. From The Stooges, The Clash, and Sex Pistols through The Buzzcocks, The Stranglers, The Undertones, and The Damned to the later, artier punk of Joy Division, Wire, and The Fall, as well as the American front of Ramones, Suicide, Talking Heads, and Blondie, author Steven Wells dissects punk's nihilistic classic tunes. Why were The Clash "So Bored with The USA"? What made Johnny Rotten dismiss the Queen as "a moron"? What were the undertones of The Stranglers' seemingly benign "Golden Brown"? What "Psycho Killer" was the focus of the Talking Heads classic song? Why were the Bad Brains "Banned in D.C."? And who was the Ramones' Sheena? All of these answers, dozens of photographs and more are provided in detail in Punk: Loud, Young, and Snotty. |

You Only Have What You Give Away
$15.52 Itka Zygmuntowicz, survivor of the infamous Auschwitz concentration camp, wrote a series of poems that touch on her horrifying experiences and thoughts from surviving two death camps. In You Only Have What You Give Away, Itka bears witness so the holocaust will never be forgotten or repeated. She writes both prose and poetry, but often expresses herself in rhyme, where she can best convey her deepest messages and feelings. In poetry, she also finds a voice to express the pain and longings as well as the joy that are so powerful within her. You Only Have What You Give Away conveys an uplifting message of love, hope, and tolerance. |
